    2012 South African Tour Jersey

A party of 71 boys and staff departed for Cape Town on the last day of the Summer Term of 2012. Over the next two days they enjoyed some spectacular sights including Table Mountain, a trip to the Cape Peninsular via the penguin colony at Simonstown and a Super Rugby match at the New Lands Stadium against the Stormers and Rebels. They also learnt much about South Africa’s history, especially the struggle of Nelson Mandela and the people of South Africa during apartheid.

As well as experiencing South African culture and history the boys enjoyed several hockey and rugby fixtures. The first fixture was against Wynbergh School, in the shadow of Table Mountain. The hockey team narrowly lost 3-nil to one of the top ranked teams in Cape Town, which included a number of SA Internationals. The rugby B team won 27-nil, with the A team losing 13-5, struggling as Oliver Beeke and Leo Ng were injured in the first few minutes, ruling them out for the rest of the tour.

The rugby B team also played at Fish Hoek where they were defeated 43-10 by their 1st team, and the A team beating Bishop’s 16-10.  The hockey team also saw success against Langa Township’s Development XI 7-nil. At Durban the B team lost 12-24, whilst the A team won with an outstanding 35-5.

The trip ended with a two day safari to the Hluhluwe Game Reserve, a breath-taking experience for the whole party.
